Our club started training at Wenvoe Village Hall at the start of 2009. It is a small club, whose members span a wide range of ages.
The club teaches the Shotokan style of Karate and belongs to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB), the largest and most successful single style karate organisation in Britain.
The main club Instructor is Lyndon Davies, who has lived in Wenvoe since 1996.Lyndon is a 6th Dan Black Belt with the KUGB and the senior KUGB grade in Wales and is a former coach to the KUGB Wales Karate Squad.
What is Karate?Karate is a system of self defence and physical culture originally developed and refined in Okinawa and Japan. The word is formed from the Japanese words Kara (empty) and Te (hand), symbolising that its practitioners - Karateka - are unarmed, but use their hands and feet for blocking and striking.
This is not a self defence class…..it is a karate class.Karate can be used for self defence and while you will learn a great deal that you will find useful, I do not promise to make you invincible in two lessons!JI will promise you that it will make you fitter, stronger and more supple and that on the way you’ll have a lot of fun. You’ll also learn to kick and punch things (if that makes you feel better!)
What do I need?To train, you need only some loose clothing (a tracksuit would be ideal) as it is not necessary to purchase a Karate suit (GI) immediately. You will train in bare feet, and all jewellery (earrings, rings etc.) must be removed or, if this is not possible, covered with tape to avoid injury.
How much does it cost?Cost of training is £3.00 children and £4:00 adults (the first lesson is free). When you have been training for a month (to give you a chance to see if you like it) you will be expected to become a member of the club. The annual membership fee will be £10
How old do I have to be?The minimum age that we take students is six years of age and in the case of young children we would like a parent to stay around during the child's first lesson so that the child is reassured he/she hasn't been deserted, and the parents can see that he/she is being taught properly.
There is no upper age limit as karate can be practiced at even quite advanced age, however if you are over the age of 65 and unused to regular exercise, we would recommend a visit to your doctor to ensure you have no health problems that may put you at risk, before starting.
If the person joining the class has a medical condition such as asthma, epilepsy or some other such difficulty could you please make this clear to the instructor. It would not prevent that person from training, but we need to be aware of it for obvious reasons
